Can you tell me what you are looking at?

Let us know what you think this image is and where and when and you'll win our appreciation.

Hints:

It's in Richmond. It's before 1970. Only one building in this image is still standing.

Best guess -- this is facing the 700 block of West Grace Street at the intersection of Grace and Pine. The church behind the boats was originally Cavalry Baptist Church, and became Immanuel Baptist Church at some point. Guess based on this Sanborn map:

The shape of the church made me think of the Southern Railway Depot at 14th and Canal at first, but that was demolished in 1914.

Almost forgot, the building at right is still there.

rocketwerks is correct. Sally Belles was further west on the same block. The apartment building to the right is still there and always looked a bit out of place IMO. There's a VCU building in place of Pinnell's now. Here's a google image:

As far as "when" the motor on the boat I can see looks like 1967-1972 style.

I love your blog BTW.

You guys are very good. In fact - I suck. I thought this was the 300 of W. Grace Street looking south at what I thought was the back of All Saints Episcopal Church which stood on the 300 block of W. Franklin st. up to about 1963. I thought the building on the right was Grace Hospital. The hospital building is now an apt. building. But I was wrong. Thanks for helping me figure this out. The image is from a 1973 student yearbook from VCU so maybe the image dates from that time too?

Thanks again!

An interesting guess, but All Saints looked very different from the church depicted in the photo. Knocking down that church was a crime against architecture -- a beautiful Gothic monstrosity. A tragic loss in the era of White Flight.
